THE FUTURE OF DESIGN WITH AI

The most heated conversation in design is generative AI and GPT. Ai is radically reshaping design and media production. The design opportunities available through the different fields of artificial intelligence (AI) for generative art are essentially limitless. But before we dig in to where all of this is going, let’s briefly cover the key concepts of AI and generative design.
 
The terms machine learning and deep learning are often used interchangeably. The main difference is basically depth. Computer vision allows machines to process visual inputs such as digital images, videos, and graphics. Natural Language Processing (NLP) is the nuances of understanding the meaning, intent, and sentiment layered in human languages. For example, GPT-4 is a language prediction model and this means that it has a neural network machine learning model that can take input text and transform it into what it predicts the most useful result will be. And finally, there is Generative Art which is a process of algorithmically generating new ideas, forms, shapes, colors or patterns. First, you create rules that provide boundaries for the creation process. Then the machine follows those rules to produce new works on your behalf. With all of these technologies, design will never be the same.


The exploding applications of AI in our lives require some controversial ethical questions. What are our human rights when our faces, motion, bodies, voices, and creative outputs, whether it is design or art, become data? Can the systems understand and apply “intent” and “purpose”? Can there be a creative conversation or exchange between the machines and humans? Or how do machines envision society in which the value of automated design systems is measured by how well they promote human values?
